Highlight of the Day: Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997. At the age of 15 Malala was the victim of a shooting in which she miraculously survived. The assassination attempt was in retaliation to Yousafzai’s demands that girls receive an equal education to boys. She went on to become the youngest individual to receive a Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17. She has been an activist and a prominent figure in promoting equal rights for women and girls in Pakistan, bringing hope and inspiration to women and girls around the world. Highlight of the Day: Silvia Mendez was born on June 7th, 1936. She is of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. In the early 1940's Mendez was nine years old when she was experienced segregation. She was turned away from enrolling in an Orange County school in California that was for "whites only." This led her parents and other families to sue the school district and win the landmark case, Méndez v. Westminster, in 1946. This case paved the way for Brown v. Board of Education seven years later and became instrumental in ending segregation in U.S. schools. She continues to be a civil rights advocate today. In 2011, she was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. #CivilRights #WomensHistoryMonth

Highlight of the day: Happy birthday Ruth Bader Ginsburg! RBG was born on March 15, 1933. She has inspired generations of women to break gender barriers. Even after facing gender discrimination as she pursued her academic goals, Ginsburg persevered and became the second woman and first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court. During her tenure as a justice, Ginsburg has fiercely advocated for gender equality and women’s rights. At 87 years old, she continued to work for gender equality as a Supreme Court Justice. #RBG #WomensHistoryMonth

Highlight of the day: Dorothy Vaughan was born on September 20, 1910. She was a mathematician and human computer who worked for NASA. In 1949, she became acting supervisor of the West Area Computers, the first African-American woman to supervise a staff at the center. Vaughan served as head of the West Computers until 1958. Vaughan and many other West Computers then joined the NASA Analysis and Computation Division, a group made up of men and women of all races. In 2016 a book by Margot Lee Shetterly—Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race drew attention to the contributions of Vaughan and other West Computers, including Katherine Johnson and Mary Jackson. #WomeninNasa #WomensHistoryMonth

Cynthia Marshall was born on December 15, 1959. She became the first Black female CEO in the history of NBA in February 2018. She is the Chief Executive officer of the Dallas Mavericks. In 2019, Cynt was honored with the Women of Power Legacy Award by Black Enterprise and was the recipient of the National ATHENA Leadership Program Award. Cynt graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with degrees in Business Administration and Human Resources Management and holds four honorary Doctorate degrees. #WomeninNBA #WomensHistoryMonth

Highlight of the Day: Reshma Saujani was born on November 18, 1975. She is a leading activist and the founder of Girls Who Code. She has spent more than a decade building movements to fight for women and girls’ economic empowerment, working to close the gender gap in the tech sector. Saujani’s TED Talk “Teach girls bravery, not perfection” led to her book and award-winning podcast Brave, Not Perfect. Saujani’s work aims to close the gender gap in science-based fields and show young girls that they don’t have to do or be what society encourages. There are now over 1,500 Girls Who Code clubs around the world and the organization has helped over 300,000 girls through classes and workshops. #GirlsWhoCode #WomensHistoryMonth

Highlight of the day: Billie Jean King was born on November 22, 1943 in Long Beach, California. One of the greatest tennis players of all time and a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient for her advocacy for women in sports she won 39 Grand Slam titles in her tennis career and led the fight for equal pay in tennis. King is an advocate of gender equality and has long been a pioneer for equality and social justice. Highlight of the day: Dr. Katya Echazarreta is the first Mexican-born woman in space. She is an electrical engineer, science communicator, and civilian astronaut. Echazarreta worked at NASA with five NASA missions including Perseverance and Europa Clipper Ground Support Equipment group.
