CARES Act
includes provisions to support all types of charitable giving for both Covid and non-Covid related causes
What does it mean to your corporate and/or individual gift?
Individual Giving
The first of these benefits allows for a universal deduction of up to $300 for *cash gifts made to charitable organizations during 2020. The deduction applies to all taxpayers, including those who do not itemize their deductions but instead claim the standard deduction. *Cash donations qualify for the new 100% limit. This deduction is allowed in addition to the standard deduction allowable to those taxpayers.
If a married couple has $100,000 in income and takes the standard deduction, the couple can reduce adjusted gross income to $99,700 with a $300 contribution.
The second benefit applies to people who are able to itemize their deductions in 2020 and suspends the usual 60 percent Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) limitation for cash gifts made to public charities.
The Cares Act allows individual taxpayers to elect to deduct donations of *cash in an amount up to 100 percent of their AGI for 2020. If an individual taxpayer makes charitable contributions in excess of the AGI limits during 2020, the excess can be carried over for five years and deducted in the future.
To qualify for this deduction, the gift must be made in *cash and directly to a qualified charity. Donations made to a donor-advised fund or private foundation do not qualify.

Corporate Charitable Giving
Corporations may increase their limit on charitable deductions up to 25% of their taxable income with a qualified contribution.
Previously, the charitable deduction limit for regular corporations was 10% of taxable income. For example, a corporation that has $1 million of taxable income may reduce this by $250,000 with a gift or gifts to a qualified charity.
