Campus Ministry

The Campus Ministry Program is the heartbeat of Sacred Heart High School. The campus ministry program strives to unite students, staff, alumnae and families in building up a faith community that proclaims and lives the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Together we celebrate the unconditional love of our God in our midst especially in the areas of liturgy, retreats, peer ministry and community outreach. The Campus Ministry program also seeks to empower young women to be in solidarity with the poor and to exercise their Christian leadership in bringing about a more just and peaceful world.

Leadership
Young women may apply for our leadership team at the end of their sophomore or junior year. They must complete an application and an essay, and participate in an interview.
The young women chosen will then be trained in public speaking, group leadership, peer ministry, leading prayer, liturgy preparation, and retreat planning and leadership. They will assist in suggesting and leading service opportunities and educational opportunities.

Retreat Program
- Freshwomen experience a day retreat early in the fall of their first year. The retreat is centered on Dominican spirituality, and what it
means to be a Sacred Heart "Comet".

- Sophomores experience a day long retreat at a site off-campus. The retreat is geared to the specific needs of the sophomore class
- Juniors experience an overnight retreat at one of the many retreat centers in our area. This retreat acknowledges the leadership of these
new upper-class women, who have (or will shortly) recently received their junior rings.

- Seniors participate in the powerful Kairos retreat, which is a total of 3 days and 2 nights at a local retreat center. The leaders of this
retreat are students specifically chosen and trained for this retreat only.

Occasionally, as time and the schedule permits, the Campus Ministry Team organizes and plans "Twilight Retreats" and prayer and fellowship opportunities to which the entire community is welcome to attend.

Sacraments
The Sacraments of the Catholic Church are a vital part of our program.
- We offer approximately 8 school-wide liturgies throughout the year, from our Opening Liturgy to our final Baccalaureate Mass.
- Classes may occasionally participate in smaller liturgies, especially during their class retreats.

- The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered at least twice per year.
- During the Easter season we celebrate those who will receive their Sacrament of Confirmation, or Baptism.

Why Community Service?

In connection with our Dominican Sisters’ mission and Sacred Heart High School philosophy of reaching out to “the poor, and the vulnerable,” SHHS Christian Service hours encourages us to live our spirit of responsibility and stewardship. Community service is aimed at positively impacting our local and global communities. Community service hours are hours spent during the academic year in work which directly benefits either people experiencing poverty, discrimination, abuse, poor health, old age, and/or physical-mental limitations or the protection of animals or the environment for which an individual does not receive financial compensation. In order to receive credit for your service hours, your location must be approved by Ms. Arredondo. It is the student’s responsibility to keep record of service hours, have their hours signed off by the supervisor in charge at the sites, and to turn in their service hours to Ms. Arredondo by the assigned due dates.
